This program offers students an opportunity to earn wages to help meet the cost of education. Many jobs are located on campus. Students who wish to work on campus under this program are responsible to seek employment and may contact the Career Center for a list of available positions. Federal Work Study positions are also available off campus for students to be paid as reading tutors to local elementary schools through the America Reads Program. For more information regarding the America Reads Program, please contact the Student Employment Coordinator in Human Resources.
The amount a student may earn will be determined by financial aid need and the actual hours and wage of the Federal Work Study position. A FAFSA must be submitted along with a Federal Work Study Application, which is available in the Financial Aid Office.
Wages will be awarded to pay on-campus, part-time employment wages for students who have demonstrated financial need. Students will be paid at a rate between minimum wage and $11.50/hour (to be determined by the hiring department) and will receive a payroll check twice a month. The Financial Aid Office will determine the student’s maximum earning limit for the year. Students must be hired for Federal Work-Study before being awarded under this program. Inform your employer of your maximum earning limit as documented on your Federal Work-Study Application.
You may not earn more than your Work-Study award. Once you earn the amount you were awarded, you must stop working under the Work-Study Program immediately. If you want to continue working after you have earned your awarded amount, you must make an appointment with the Financial Aid Office to determine if you are eligible for additional Work-Study funds.
If you have not worked on campus previously, you must submit the following information to the Student Payroll Office before you begin working:
- An Employee Eligibility Verification Form (Form I-9)
- Acceptable documentation to establish your identity and employment eligibility
- A W-4 Form.
Once hired by a department, you will submit timecards of hours worked on the dates indicated on your timecards to your supervisor for signature and verification of accuracy and then submission of timecard to the Payroll Office.
Restrictions on Work-Study employment include, but are not limited to:
- You may not work more than 20 hours per week
- You may not be paid for working more than one job during the same hours,
- You cannot work during hours you are scheduled to be in class.
Sufficient employment opportunities are available but not guaranteed. Students may contact the Financial Aid Office to obtain a Federal Work-Study Application.
